In this session we will be discussing the word, the part of speech, (whether its a noun, verb, or adjective) the meaning of the word. Then of course, as I mentioned we will put the word into a sentence so you can get a sense of the word in context. Cath Anne: [00:02:36] Lets begin. Cath Anne: [00:02:37] So the first word for this week is conclusion. Conclusion is a noun. It means the end or close. The word is important in academic writing, or if you are giving a presentation. You will frequently hear the phrase, In conclusion which tells people that this is the end. What was the final result? In conclusion, John won the award. John worked really hard at his studies, and in conclusion he won the award. So, in the end because of his hard work John won the award. Im going to write in conclusion down because that will be a helpful phrase for you to use both in your writing and in your presentations. Cath Anne: [00:03:50] The next word is conduct. It is a verb meaning to organize or to lead an activity. Make sure not to confuse this word with the noun conduct which refers to someones behavior. The stress in this word is on the second syllable: conduct, conduct. Cath Anne: [00:04:13] There are many different things that we can conduct. Some of the more common ones are: we can conduct research or we can conduct business. Cath Anne: [00:04:22] Maybe we can conduct a meeting. Used in a sentence, We can say Joe conducts the orchestra. In other words, he leads the orchestra. Joe conducts the orchestra. So, again conduct as opposed to conduct. Cath Anne: [00:04:49] The next word is consistent. Consistent is an adjective. It means acting or done in the same way over time; not moving away from principles or being contradictory. So, we could say, The mom was consistent in baking cookies for the children because the mom was consistent. Cath Anne: [00:05:22] The children came to expect the cookies. Yum yum. So the mom repeatedly made cookies and the children, therefore came to expect them. She was consistent. Cath Anne: [00:05:37] Number four is a word that I have mentioned pretty consistently throughout this session which is context. It is a noun. It means part of a statement that can either be written or spoken to surround a specific word or phrase. So, the best way to understand the meaning of the word is to put it in context. So, that is essentially what we are doing here we are putting these words in context. If you are if you understand what is being said at the beginning and what is being said at the end then you can probably guess what the word or phrase means. Cath Anne: [00:06:24] So, for example, Dark clouds covered the sky. It was a perilous journey and no one returned. Cath Anne: [00:06:32] If you dont know what the word perilous means because it is a bit complicated you can put it into context. So, in other words, look at the words surrounding the word: dark clouds, no one returned. These are bad things. This indicates that perilous means something bad or dangerous, maybe even life threatening. Cath Anne: [00:06:53] In other words in order to understand a word we can put it into context. Perilous means something bad or dangerous. Cath Anne: [00:07:07] Finally, we have the word coordination. Coordination is a noun. Cath Anne: [00:07:24] It is a combination of parts or people working together. We must have coordination if we are going to succeed. There was no coordination between the two teams and they were not successful in attaining their goal. If there is no coordination things do not work out well. So, in other words coordination means things that are working together simultaneously towards an end and often a successful goal. Cath Anne: [00:07:55] So that is it for this week. The Significance of Emilia in Othello Essay - 879 Words

The Significance and Dramatic Purposes of Emilia In Shakespeare’s â€Å"Othello†, Emilia is considered one of the minor characters. She is the wife of Iago and the lady in waiting to Desdemona. Emilia makes a crucial contribution to the play as a whole. She contributes to the characterization of a couple of key characters and adds to the dramatic irony of the play. She plays an essential role in the escalation of the dramatic action. She also adds to some of the themes of the play. Emilia contributes to the characterization of both Iago and Desdemona. Emilia enters the play in Act II, Scene i when she and the party arrive in Cyprus. Iago speaks to her rudely and treats her disparagingly in front of the others; â€Å"Come on, come on! You are†¦show more content†¦These two instances when Emilia calls out the evil doer (not realizing she is actually referring to her husband) also builds on the dramatic tension that is ultimately released when Emilia tells the truth and exposes her husband in Act 5, scene ii. E milia contributes greatly to the dramatic action of the play. In the rising action she unwittingly gives her husband the very object that will seal Desdemona’s fate. The handkerchief she hands to Iago becomes the material evidence that convinces Othello of Desdemona’s guilt. There are a couple of opportunities where Emilia is in a position to alter the tragic outcome. In Act III, scene iv Desdemona asks Emilia if she know where she lost her handkerchief. Emilia states, â€Å" I know not, madam.† (III.iv.23). Again, later in the scene Emilia misses another opportunity to foil Iago’s plan. Emilia sees how upset Othello gets about Desdemona not being able to produce the handkerchief yet she does not come forth. Instead, she blames it on men and marriage; â€Å" Tis not a year or two shows us a man. They are all but stomachs, and we all but food†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (III.iv.103-104). She does not see the connection between the jealous husband and the handkerchief. This dramatic device of having the character being naà ¯ve to information about which the audience is aware builds tension. From its creation to this very day it has impacted society’s way of life and enforced ideologies that affect various decisions. Television is what connects us to the outside world. It provides a sense of belonging for many and, metaphorically, becomes a member of the family. The concept of Patriarchy has been present in sitcoms and influences how we are supposed to act around others. Despite the downfall of sitcoms recently, they still are used to help us gain an understanding. In Modern Family’s â€Å"Mother’s Day† episode, these ideologies are reflected through how a normal person would use them today. The discussion of place, home and family is illustrated yet also broken down within the episode. The concept of home is an influential and prevailing one to say the least. It is considered a place, as there is an attached emotion and a sense of belonging. Adding to this, it is something that can be constructed and shifted by an individual.
